Kedarnath Trek Overview

Kedarnath Yatra Trek is one of the most prominent treks among trekkers across the globe, located near the Mandakini River in the district of Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, India. Kedarnath is situated at a height of 11,755 feet (3,583 meters).

The Kedarnath Yatra trek’s starting point is Gaurikund; the total trek distance is around 22 km from one side, with a blend of steep and rocky trails, making this trek a bit challenging. The Kedarnath Yatra trek duration is 2 nights and 3 days, with moderate difficulty levels, yet challenging for many.

The temperature here usually varies; during the day it is 13°C to 18°C, and at night it is 0°C to 7°C. The best time to do the Kedarnath Yatra Trek is generally between April and June, and then from September to October.

The weather between late April to early June is reasonably pleasant, and the snow has almost melted, making trekking easier. The Kedarnath Temple typically opens during this period, attracting numerous devotees and trekkers worldwide.

During September to October, it is less crowded compared to the pre-monsoon season and is considered the best time for the Kedarnath Yatra Trek.

It is advisable to avoid trekking during the monsoon months of July and August due to the increased risk of landslides and heavy rainfall, which can pose risks. Kedarnath is not to be mistaken for an easy trek.

Hikers or beginners who are not used to long journeys or high altitudes may face challenges. Therefore, it’s generally recommended that trekkers maintain a reasonable level of physical fitness to participate in this journey.

Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva that is worshipped by devotees worldwide. Among the widely popular Char Dham, one is Kedarnath, which has a deep spiritual significance.

Kedarnath is also a part of the Panchkedar, associated with the eternal presence of the divine Lord Shiva. The Kedarnath Yatra is regarded as a route to spiritual liberation (moksha) and offers a deep experience of devotion, faith, and the splendour of nature.

The Kedarnath temple is carved with intricate details, making it a masterpiece featuring an innovative and creative Indian architect. Behind the Kedarnath, a great, gigantic rock is located, known as Bhim Shila, believed to protect the temple from natural calamities.

Gaurikund is a small town located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, at an altitude of roughly 1,982 meters (6,500 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayas.
