Char Dham Yatra Overview

The Dev Bhoomi in Uttarakhand, India, has several pilgrimage sites; among these, one is the Char Dham. It is widely popular among Hindu devotees worldwide. Visiting the Char Dham is believed to provide spiritual contentment and purification of the soul.

Millions of people undertake this pilgrimage every year with full devotion. The Char Dham includes Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.

The Char Dham usually opens in late April or early May, making it the best time to visit. The temples typically close in October or November as winter approaches, which increases the risk of natural calamities, inaccessibility, and high-altitude sickness, making it a worse idea to go during these months of the year. The Char Dham Yatra typically begins with Rishikesh, adding to a wonderful journey.

Helicopter services are also available for the Char Dham Yatra. Due to the challenging trails, many pilgrims often choose to do the Char Dham Yatra by helicopter, which is more convenient and comfortable for the elderly, physically unfit individuals, or the ones who can’t take up this demanding and challenging trek.

The Char Dham Yatra by helicopter is completed in around 4-5 days, whereas traditionally it takes around 10–12 days for completion.

Yamunotri is located at a height of 10,614 (3,235 meters) in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The Yamunotri trek distance is about 6 kilometres. Yamunotri is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, also considered a sister of Lord Yama, the God of Death.

The temple is located near the origin of the Yamuna River. Yamunotri offers the Char Dham as a first stop, followed by the other three pilgrimage sites.

Gangotri is located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. Gangotri is the origin of the most sacred river, the Ganga, situated at a height of 9,976 feet (3,042 meters).

The Gangotri temple here is dedicated to the goddess Ganga and is situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi, holding a high spiritual essence.

Kedarnath is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India. Situated at an altitude of 11,755 feet (3,583 meters). The Kedarnath trek distance is approximately 22 km one way. Kedarnath Temple is believed to be the abode of the ultimate divine Lord Shiva.

Kedarnath is among the twelve most worshipped Jyotirlingas and is one of the five holy shrines devoted to Lord Shiva, known as the Panch Kedar.

Badrinath is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. The temple is situated at an altitude of 10,279 feet (3,133 meters). The Badrinath temple is regarded as the abode of Vishnu and is one of the most holy places to visit.

Millions of pilgrims visit here and seek his blessings. The devotees can get a beautiful view of the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges.

The Char Dham Yatra is a once-in-a-lifetime experience offering the ultimate feeling of meeting the divine, a sense of achievement, and an acknowledgement of gratitude for the pilgrims while enjoying exquisite views of nature’s splendour.
