Panch Kedar Trek is one of the most prominent treks in the Garhwal region of Devbhoomi, Uttarakhand, India. Panch Kedar trek duration is 12 days and 11 nights, with a maximum altitude of 12,075 feet (3,680 meters).

Panch Kedar is among the most renowned treks navigating the five sacred abodes of Lord Shiva in Uttarakhand. The Panch Kedar is quite popular amongst the innumerable pilgrims and trekkers worldwide.

The trekkers decide to embark on this trek to receive the divine favor of Lord Shiva. These five sacred shrines comprise Kedarnath, Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath and Kalpeshwar. 


Kedarnath: Kedarnath is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped by devotees worldwide. The Kedarnath trek distance is 22 kilometers on one side, situated at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet). It is also one of the abodes covered in the Char Dham Yatra. Shiva’s hump is worshipped in Kedarnath, blessing his devotees. 

 

Madhyamaheshwar: It is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India, with an altitude of 3,497 meters (11,473 feet). The Madhyamaheshwar trek distance is around 18–10 kilometers one way, which is considered a challenging trek. The navel of Lord Shiva is worshipped and named Madhyamaheshwar. 


Tungnath: Tungnath is located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, in the Rudraprayag district, at a height of 12,073 feet (3,680 meters), with a trek distance of around 12 km. Tungnath is the highest abode of Mahadev across the globe. Tungnath Temple is associated with Lord Shiva’s arms and is revered globally, offering panoramic views from the top.


Kalpeshwar: Kalpeshwar temple is located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. It is situated at a height of 7,217 feet (2,200 meters) and has a trek distance of around 12–14 km. It is believed that Lord Shiva’s hair fell here, and progressively, this place started being visited for worship by people from all over the world. Shiva’s matted hair (Jata) is worshipped in Kalpeshwar, one of the Panch Kedar.

 

Rudranath: Rudranath is nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas, situated at an altitude of 11,800 feet (3,600 meters). The trek distance is around 20–24 km. The trek is demanding yet rewarding. Rudranath is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s face, which is associated with his fierceness and destructive aspect. This place is visited by numerous devotees to get a glimpse of Mahadev in his Rudra form.

Panch Kedar Tour Package (Itinerary)

  • Drive to Guptkashi from Haridwar, covering a distance of about 200 km in around 6–8 hours.
  • Drive through Devprayag and Rudraprayag to reach Guptkashi, beholding the splendour of the sacred Maa Ganga.
  • As you approach Devprayag, witness the merging of the religious rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi and the hilly surroundings filled with greenery.
  • Reach Guptkashi and check in at your hotel.

  • After having breakfast, drive 30 km to Sonprayag from Guptkashi in about 1- 1.5 hours.
  • Hire a taxi to Gaurikund from Sonprayag (at your expense).
  • Start this challenging trek from Gaurikund (6,503 feet) to Kedarnath (11,755 feet).
  • The trek distance is 22 km one way, and it takes around 5-7 hours.
  • The trail is a blend of rocky, paved, and uneven on some points; a steep climb is demanded on some parts of the Kedarnath Yatra trek.
  • Reach the Kedarnath temple and get a pious sight of Lord Shiva in his Kedar form, with the sound of enchanting bells.
  • Have dinner and enjoy the night halt in Kedarnath.
  • After experiencing the divine presence of Bholenath, have breakfast and begin to trek down to Gaurikund.

  • Ransi is situated at an altitude of 6,562 feet (2000 meters), 20 km from Ukhimath.

  • After a tempting breakfast, begin your trek down journey from Ransi to Bantoli, which is mostly an easy trail to be followed by the trekkers with a blend of easy to moderate ascents.
  • The trek distance is around 6 km, which is easily manageable.
  • Catch glimpses of the Ropa River flowing along the trek and get mesmerised by its serene beauty.
  • Witness the famous Bheemsi waterfall and several other small cascading waterfalls on your way to Bantoli.
  • Upon arrival at Bantoli, freshen up and have a delicious dinner.

  • Begin the trek with a moderate ascent, which gets tougher as you pass through Khadra, Nanu, Moukheem and Koonchatti. 
  • During the trek, reach Maikhamba, which is 4 km away from Madhyamheshwar Dham.
  • The team will also reach Koonchatti, which is 3 km away from Nanu.
  • From Koonchatti to Madhyamaheshwar’s 3-kilometre trek, you’ll not find any shops.
  • The trail gets tougher with a lot of steep ascents, surrounded by gigantic mountains and beautiful valleys.
  • You will see the magnificent Madhyamaheshwar range as you get closer to the Madhyamaheshwar temple.
  • During this trek, spot the majestic peaks of Mandani (20,308 feet), Janhukut (22,326 feet), and Chaukhamba (23,418 feet) and behold their magical sight.
  • The trek trail about half a kilometre before Madhyamaheshwar is slightly flat, unlike the previous trek trails.
  • Reach the Madhyamheshwar Dham after covering a trek distance of 10 km, get the divine sight of Lord Shiva, and offer your prayers to him.
  • You can also witness a small kund called Amrit Kund, near Madhyamheshwar Dham.

The best time to do the Panch Kedar Trek is from September to October, as the weather is quite stable and pleasant. Like most of the other well-known treks, the Panch Kedar Trek must not be attempted in the monsoon season, as the unpredictable weather, landslide-prone conditions and slippery trekking trails make the monsoon season a tough time to trek in.   

The unpredictable weather, uneven-rough terrain, steep slopes and uphill climbs make the Panch Kedar a moderately challenging trek that can be attempted by both fit beginners and experienced trekkers.
