The Pangarchulla Peak Trek is a popular trek among adventure lovers. The Pangarchulla trek is located near Joshimath in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India, encircled by the Garhwal Himalayas. It is situated at a height of 15,069 feet (4,595 meters). 

 

The total trek distance is approximately 38 kilometres. The Pangarchulla Peak trek’s starting point is Joshimath. This trek has a duration of 7 days and 6 nights. The best time to do the Pangarchulla Peak trek is between April and June, and then in September and November. 

 

The difficulty level of the Pangarchulla trek lies between moderate and difficult; however, this trek is suitable for moderate trekkers and not for raw beginners. The Pangarchulla Peak trek starts in Joshimath, which is a tranquil hill town in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India, located at an elevation of about 1,875 meters (6,150 feet). 

 

Surrounded by a part of the western Himalayas,  the Garhwal Himalayas. Joshimath is a significant religious, spiritual, and trekking hub in the region, attracting devotees, nature enthusiasts, and adventure seekers worldwide. This trek takes you through the green meadows of Auli, famous for skiing. 

 

From there, it climbs up through thick forests filled with pine, oak, Bhoj Patra, Himalayan Birch and walnut trees. As trekkers climb higher, the scenery transforms into wide snow-covered areas, especially in April and May. The last part of the climb to the peak is steep and challenging, but the amazing views of nearby mountains like Nanda Devi, Chitrakhamba, and Dronagiri make it an extraordinary experience.

Pangarchulla Peak Trek Itinerary

  • Early morning departure from Rishikesh to Joshimath in an SUV or a pushback traveller, depending on the group size.
  • Covering a distance of around 248 kilometres in a duration of about 8–10 hours.
  • Witness the divine sight of the river Ganges.
  • Along the way, you can watch the confluence of the rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi. On the way to Joshimath, get a glimpse of the famous Nanda Devi Peak. 
  • By evening, reach Joshimath, situated at a height of 6,150 feet.
  • Enjoy a filling dinner and spend the night in Joshimath’s homestay.
  • Have a healthy breakfast and drive to Dhak Village, the starting point of the trek.
  • The driving distance from Joshimath to Dhak village is around 10 kilometres, with a duration of around half an hour (30 minutes).
  • Reach the Dhak Village and begin your trek to Gulling.
  • The trek begins with a moderate ascent on narrow, unsteady and stony paths. 
  • While trekking, you will get a beautiful view of the Zanskar and Dhauladhar ranges. 
  • Cross Kharchi and Upper Tugashi villages and Nanda Devi National Park.

  • Have dinner at the camp and stay overnight.
  • After breakfast, start with one of the longest and most challenging parts of the trek; thus, carry filled water bottles for proper hydration.

  • Make an adventurous and challenging walk over the ridge to Pangarchulla Peak. 
  • From the Pangarchulla peak spot, you can see gigantic mountain ranges like Nanda Ghunti, Trishul, Nanda Devi, Changabhanga Peak, Dronagiri, Hathi Parvat, Kamet, Neelkanth, Chaukhamba massifs and many more. 
  • Soak in the breathtaking views from the Pangarchulla peak and resume your trek back to Khullara or stay at the campsite.
  • Stay overnight in your camps under the starlit sky with a sense of achievement.
  • of around 12 km from Khullara to Dhak in around 5 to 7 hours. 
  • Drive to Joshimath, a driving distance of approximately 12 km.
  • The team will reach Joshimath by late afternoon and enjoy the transitioning landscapes around them.
  • Check into your homestay or hotel and spend the day at leisure, exploring the local market or visiting spiritual places nearby.
  • Have a mouth-watering dinner and enjoy your overnight stay at the homestay or hotel.

The best time for the Pangarchulla Trek is between April and June, and then in September and November. From April to June, you’ll have the opportunity to experience blissful and clear weather with clearer paths and without any extreme temperatures. September to November is when you’ll experience stabilised weather with increased snow from November.

The weather is quite pleasant in summer, with a temperature varying from 14°C to 21°C. Winters generally have colder weather, with a minimum temperature of -5°C, whereas higher altitudes have cold temperatures.

The distance of the Pangarchulla Trek ( Joshimath) is around 490 kilometres, which requires a time of roughly 12–13 hours.

From late November to early March, hikers would get a sight of snowcapped landscapes. However, from December to February, you’ll experience snowfall and an abundance of snow all around.

This trek is not suitable for absolute beginners and first-timers, as the trek is quite challenging. However, if you’re physically fit and have good physical endurance, you can opt for this trek. A prior trekking experience is much appreciated; the trek is best suited for experienced trekkers.

One has to prepare their body well enough to attempt this moderate-to-difficult-level trek by starting with brisk walking and running daily for 30-35 minutes each. If it gets tough for you to do these activities for this long, begin with shorter durations but maintain consistency. Adding some vigorous exercises to the routine once or twice a week will boost your stamina for sure, resulting in a smooth and fun trekking adventure. 

To attempt this Pangarchulla Peak trek, the participant should be at least 15 years old to take on this trek.

At the homestay in Joshimath, the trekkers will get proper attached washroom facilities. On the other hand, at the campsite, a dry toilet facility with a tent and a mud pit hole will be available.

Starry experience

Amazing experience.... The view from top is just epic. The view includes mountains like - Kedarnath, Chaukhambha, Neelkantha, Neelgiri, Hathi- Ghora parvat , Dunagiri and the two highest peaks of India, Mount Nanda Devi and Mount Kamet. Last 2km trek is challenging

I trekked Brahamatal with my son who is 16 years old. My experience with offbeat was very good. Everything was managed well and on time. They took care of my son very well , the guide was with him all the time .Cook was good. They even made delicious food. The weather was awesome. Had a lot of fun.
